Zip Back up?

Thanks. Ok well I have lots of pics; all saved to CD so far. When I add more
I'm going to make it a habbit of adding to CD as well. As for backing up; I
guess it's a good idea to have (as you all have pointed out) more then one
device. As for backing up daily weekly........ya for my use not really
necessary.

So I think I have it all sorted out now ha.

thanks

out on the keyboard:
Oh another question. What's a thumb drive?

Thanks

Lisa,

Thumb drive (approximate size), Flash drive (type of media), and I guess
you called it a Pen? All the same.

Good, glad to hear it. Once again, I'm not trying to tell you what you
should do, but give you the infomation so you can make appropriate choices
yourself.

A very small device (roughly the size and shape of a thumb) than connects to
a USB port just like an external drive. But it's all electronic, not
mechanical.. These are inexpensive and come in various sizes from about 64MB
to about 16GB.

If you have very little to back up, this might be more appropriate for you
than a 500GB external hard drive.

Ok so it is more reliable then a flash drive (or pen as I called it). Because
this is exactly what I was going to buy and didn't because most of you told
me to get an external hard drive even though I stated I only had 9GB to back
up. hmmmmmmm confused! LOL Well the sales reps also advised me to go with the
XHD. Ok well I've exhuasted the post. I guess I'll just have to make up my
mind.

Now I have to figure out if I want to just back up files or programs as
well. That would be better I think (and if so then I'd keep the EHD).

Thanks a bunch!

No, they are the same. "Thumb" drive is a synonym for flash or pen drive.

I don't remember, but if I said that, I missed the 9GB number and apologize
for it.

Bear in mind that a thumb drive is essentially an external hard drive. It's
just smaller (both physically and in content) than most drives and works
electronically rather than mechanically.

For the future, please remember to heed this warning: with extremely rare
exceptions, sales reps in computer stores know next to nothing and give you
very poor unreliable advice. Do not believe *any* advice they give you.
Their job normally pays very little, and if they had any real skill and
knowledge, they would be able to get a much better, higher-paying job.

Regarding backing up files, it depends entirely on what files you have and
how important they are to you.

Regarding backing up programs, almost always doing so is useless. Except for
a very occasional very small program, all programs have entries and
references within the registry and elsewhere in \windows. It can't be run
under Windows unless it was installed in that copy of Windows. So if you
have a problem with Windows, having a backup of programs won't help you at
all, and you will have to reinstall your programs after you reinstall
Windows.
