ZERO VALUES IN QUERIES

I have a form which works from a calculation set up in the query, which
was working fine but I now have a "null value" which has appeared in
the calculation and the answer is -1 i.e the caluclation is:

total cost = shift cost x number of x shifts x number of teams -
number of free shifts etc
and in this case the teams and shifts were free i.e 1 x 1 -1 = -1

I basically need to know how to get it to recognise a null value!

I am self-taught on Access 2000 and the "Help" subject on Nz is all
gobbletygook!!

Can someone explain in very simple terms please how to get it to
recognise the null value in the calculation I have set up on the
query?

In a query:
total cost: Nz([shift cost],0) * Nz([Number Of],0) * Nz([shifts],0) *
Nz([number of teams],0)
