Your password will expire in X days.

Hi,
Is there anyway I can get windows to not say anything to the user about
their password expiring until like 7 days before it does? It's annoying
some people that they change their password every 30 days, and then 15
days later they get the message.

Your password will expire in 15 days.. do you want to change it now?

How can I scale that back a little?

Matt,

Set it to zero! That will result in this popup happening the day that the
password is to be changed. Actually, I do not believe that it is set by
'days' but by 'hours'.

Opps. Sorry!

This is something that you would set via Group Policy. You would simply
navigate to the following location:

Computer Configuration | Windows Settings | Security Settings | Local Policy
| Security Options

and then, in the right pane, scroll down until you see the "Prompt user to
change password before expiration" and then set that to 0 days ( or to 1 day
or to 2 days or to whatever you want ). I do not know where you set you
password policy but I would make that setting 'there'. I typically make any
password policy configuration in the Domain Security Policy.

Well,

It looks like I am a bit forgetful today. I should have added that if you
do not want your users to be able to change their password until the system
requires them to ( in your case, at 30 days ) then you can take a look at
the following MSKB Article on how to set up a GPO to enforce this:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=309799

I am not sure if this fits into your password policy. If not, I like to
make sure that the Minimum Password Age is set to at least seven days ( this
prevents your users from immediately changing their password xxx number of
times in rapid succession so that they can bypass the 'Enforce Password
History setting - if set - to get back to their 'favorite' password almost
immediately ).

HTH,

Cary
