You know what I hate?

I hate people that configure their virus scanners/mail servers to
automatically send a return email to anyone suspected of sending them a
virus! Viruses like MyDoom (and plenty of others) only APPEAR to have come
from the remote address and it is not appropriate to bounce a "nastygram"
back to an address that was not even the originator!!!

Well, I can't say I 'hate' them, but I do agree that automatic replies are
inappropriate, for the very reason you state.

I hate people that configure their virus scanners/mail servers to
automatically send a return email to anyone suspected of sending them a
virus!

Especially since to send the mail they have to identify the virus, and
identifying the virus sould be able to tell them if it is the kind that
typically sends itself out in spoofed mail messages (certainly the text
descriptions on the anti-virus web sites have that info, so there is no
reason the database the virus scanner uses couldn't have it as well).
Knowing that, and sending the bounce anyway is tantamout to aiding and
abetting the virus writers by creating even more havoc than the original
virus.

For Gods sake anti-virus vendors: GET A CLUE!

Come to think of it, I suspect you could even make a good case for
a gross negligence lawsuit against anti-virus vendors out of this.

Any lawyers out there looking for new victims to screw money out of?
(I only bring up the lawsuit topic because I suspect it is the only
thing which will force clues down vendors throats :).

Maybe this could be a new profit center for SCO?

Report it as spam to their provider, it is an automated mailing.

Many of them already have a clue, the program is configurable
to not send the notifications. The clue sticks should be whacking
the mail server admins.

I totally agree. This stupid behavior will only cause more undesired network
traffic.
