The updates are posted here for 3 main reasons.

Those who are behind firewalls or systems that will not allow the updates.
Those who download them on a fast connection at work and bring them home.
Those who do not want Windows Update to create System Restore Points.

By the way, please do not post subject lines that are so long they cannot be
read with out playing around with them. The most I could see of your suject
line was:

and that was by shrinking my message box. Before that the most I could read

If people cannot read your subject line they are less likely to reply.

So--what have you tried for the scan time not recorded? Are you running any
registry cleaners? Have you run a repair via add or remove programs on
Windows Defender?

Further to Tim`s comment. News doesn`t always necessarily travel very fast
depending on what part of the world your server is located and the update
mechanisms employed by AS programs. There are those who benefit from the many
free versions AS programs that do not always come with real time protection
and automatic update mechanisms. This NG provides a great medium thru which
those of us who are dedicated to providing protection, not only to ourselves
but others, keep one another informed and educated. That must be a good
thing.

Hi Tim,

Well, to be fair to the original poster, if you open the message, click in
the Subject line, and then press the "End" key on the keyboard, you can see
the end of the Subject line.

It reads: "You know, it's awfully strange that someone has to CONTINUOUSLY
post signature updates here for a system that should be updating
automatically!"

I'm not saying I agree with the OP's message though. :>

OK, I apologize for the signature quip - but NO I am not running ANY kind of
registry cleaner. If you read past the Subject line that PO'd some, I have
tried a repair install, removed, ripped all left overs out of the registry,
and reinstalled countless times. I am right now running a manual scan so the
Not scanned in 3 days goes away.

Also, for some reason the scan that runs from Scheduled Tasks only runs
about a minute, with an exit code of 0. However, if I kick it off manually
from within the app it runs for much longer (right now been running for over
4 minutes)

Could someone post the Scheduled Task command line so I can see if something
is up there?

There IS no repair option - just Remove and Change, and the Change option
only offers Remove and Update. Doing another update now.

Hi Alan,

Obviously I Was able to read the full subject line other wise my respone
would have made no sense. I just think full messages in the subject line are
poor form. In this case the subject line was in fact completely different
from the body of the message:

The gentleman is having problems getting WD to scan/remember scans so
extended his gripe (legitimate as it may be) to "Oh, and it appears that this
brain dead app can't even update itself" [This is not a quote, this is my
reading of the post].

By the way, reading this group using IE6 the only way I can see the full
subject line in a case like this is to open the message in a new window.

Happy Holidays Alan,

Mike,

Yes, there are limitations and advantages between using a newsgroup reader
and a web based reading of this group (and others). The web way allows for
authentification of users (e.g. I know Bill Sanderson IS Bill Sanderson when
I see his <MVP> icon. My job has banned the use of Outlook and Outlook
Express for security reasons. I do on occasion use Thunderbird and see some
value in it (sorting is much easier).

I'm only at 1024x768 because I need big print.

Its well hidden, but it is there. I've never heard anyone describe whether
a repair is different from an update.

I don't have access to a machine with Defender on it at the moment, but hit
the other link in the add or remove programs entry for Windows
Defender--"click here for support info..." I've never heard any clear
distinction, so if one worked and the other did not, it would be of
interest.

Yeah--something's broken. I need to have a test machine I can hit at all
times or quit hanging out here--I can't post the scheduled command at the
moment.

In general, it appears that folks running on Windows 2000 have more troubles
with scheduled operations than XP--does this apply to you?

So--the scheduled scans ends with a 0 completion code, but too quickly, and
the UI doesn't update? Does the scheduler log file indicate anything
useful? I suspect not, since that's probably where you are reading the
completion code.

What about the events log records for those same scans--anything different
from manually triggered scans.
