"You do not have the authority" - ???

T

Tony Meloche

I am the only user of my computer, since the day it came out of the box,
and Control Panel/User Accounts verifies that I am the
owner/administrator. (There are no other user accounts except the
disabled "Guest" which appears to be a Windows default to be used if
needed). But when I try to schedule Avast! to run automatically at a
given time, it requires a "password". When I put one it, it refuses it:
"You do not have administrative rights on this computer". I've tried
doing it both through Windows task scheduler and Avast's resident
scheduler - same result. This may look a lot like another thread here
today, but it hasn't been discussed specifically that I can see, and I
didn't want to hijack another thread. I tried the TweakUI logon thing,
but that blue-screened me (first time ever), and I undid it as soon as I
was back up. In any other similar situation I have had, the computer
always recognizes me as the Administrator. Solutions?

Many thanks,

Tony

Does your Day-to-Day Administrator account use a password ? If
not then add one. Then do your scheduling with that account name
and password.

Go to microsoft.com and search for "You do not have administrative rights
on this computer". It will list the reasons for this. You should find the
solution you need.

Thanks, Frank - that did give me more info, but I cannot get past this
point:

To schedule the task, I must fill out the password box, which says
"Administrator" (me)/Tonys (the computer "name"). I put in a passsword
and re-type it, hit "enter" and I still get the message: You do not
have the right", etc.

Does the *account* actually have that password? that is the key point.
In the scheduler, you enter the *account* password, which must not be blank.

If the account doesn't have a password and you enter one in the scheduler...
it won't work.

As usual, you hit it in the nose Patrick - no, I have never used a
password - don't like dealing with one for the computer itself, as I am
the only person who ever uses this machine. Now I *understand* why it
didn't work, and I appreciate that.

You might also want to give kudos to McCarty who gave you the same
solution some 6 hours earlier.

You may be the only *user* of the machine, but are you the only one who
might have *access* to it? Do you have private data on the machine? If yes,
then you might want to re-visit the fact that you do not use passwords.
