yet another newbie question

Someone suggested (after a heated debate as to why FrontPage sucks as a
web editor) that I run my site through http://validator.w3.org . When I
did it came up with an error message saying that I needed to insert a
DOCTYPE into every page of my site. And based on what I think I
understood from the site it should go at the top above the html of the
page. But when I try to copy/paste it into my page and then save, FP
shifts it down into the body of the page.

Clearly I don't exactly know what I'm doing... but why won't it stay at
the top?

It's much easier to use a stand alone validator such as CSELite,
which you can download and run on your own machine.
If / when you use it correct errors one at a time, starting at the top
of a page then and save and recheck as correcting one error
will often correct others.

<imho>
1. You will drive yourself half way nuts trying to validate at W3C
2. Most of the time, folks who "bash" FrontPage really don't have a clue.
and are "Dreaming" out loud........pun intended.

Did you turn off the "reformat code" option?

Did you try something like:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">

Beware - these doctypes are no mere code. They actually mean something, so
putting the wrong one on your page may make it display weird on some
browsers.

No I simply tried to paste it into the document, and that is the code
that I tried. I actually just downloaded and installed CSELite HTML
validator and it seems to be able to insert the code for me (but it also
seems to go crazy with the rest of my site)

When using CSELite keep in mind that it
validates html. So, ignore the errors it shows
for java scripts and dhtml effects.
