Yellow envelope "you have unopened items". Where are they?

In the lower right hand corner to the right of task bar there is a yellow
envelope.
When I place my mouse pointer on it it reads "you have new unopened items".
I would like to know what that means and how I can get to those unopened
items.
I do not understand the function of the yellow envelope. It just recently
appeared.

it;'s an alert so you know to check your inbox - try double clicking on it.
outlook should open when you do...

I have the same problem, sometimes it actually tells me I have mail but other
times i double click it takes me to my inbox only to find out it's empty.

No signs of anything, just notified of something but what?
