XP2800 Barton 333Mhz (un)locking / FSB Q.

me

Hello all,

My plan:

Buy an Asus A7N8X Deluxe, equip it with 2x 512 Gb Dane Elec. PC3200 DDR RAM
and an XP2800-333Mhz (locked-week production, week 40).

My Q.:

Will I be able to increase FSB to 200 Mhz and LOWER the multiplyer so the
XP2800 which is rated for 333 Mhz will run at 400 Mhz, so in sync with the
memory? I will try the stock AMD cooler that came with it, as my
assumption is it will not get (much) hotter if I lower the multiplyer.

As I understand from reading around, a LOCKED XP2800-333 means one cannot
set a higher multiplyer, but one CAN set a lower multiplyer.

So 200*11 or maybe 11.5 should work? I also assume from reading aroud that
a CPU and RAM synced at 400 Mhz will run snappier in daily life than a
333Mhz over-multiplied XP2800 (theoretically that is, not possible with
mine) in combination with 400Mhz RAM would do.

Please tell me if I am way off here.

Thanks for any input,

Leon

I just did what you're thinking of, but apperently my 2800 barton is not
locked. I was able to change the multiplier.
I put de CPU to 200x10,5 and the memory on agressive and 100%. So the memory
is now also on 200 Mhz.

In AIDA 32 I got a big improvement in memory performance:
read: 2456 > 2934
write: 995 > 1159

3dmark03 didn't improve much (3766 > 3791)
I'm monitoring the CPU temp, but so far it's exactly the same as it was (42
Celcius, using the standard AMD cooler). That's not surprising, cause with
the lower multiplier the CPU is not running much faster now.
