XP Won't Work With DHCP

I have a few machines connected to a router. One of them (XP Home SP2) is
unable to acquire a DHCP address. (The connection status says 'invalid IP
address' and the address remains 0.0.0.0.) The 'repair' button doesn't work
as it will say it has problems 'renewing your IP address'. It all works fine
with a static IP address (though when I try the repair button under a static
IP address, it says it 'cannot register with DNS'.

And whenever I change the IP address or change between trying with DHCP and
static, Windows insists on a reboot, which a Linksys tech tells me should not
happen on XP. Is there a utility to fix my networking or can I reinstall it
without too much extra work? Any thoughts as to the problem?

Thanks for the link, Jack, but nothing too new there for me. No problem with
my network card or basic network (I can connect with static IP, as well as
from other machines using DHCP), I have no firewall software running and
Windows software is always disabled. I ran the Winsock Fix utility, but that
didn't help (and it was unable to backup my registry entries anyhow). I also
ran the LSP-Fix utility and it decalred that there were no problems.

Any other suggestions?

hi sir , I have to manage a network but i am not technical person. Can u help
plz

We have a wired router, a swtich, 20 computers and dhcp enabled (but there
is no server, only Windows XP Pro machines). I want to know why dhcp is
enables and no computer is given static IP address, why?

I want to setup this network again and wnat that each computer can have
access to internet and can share files between other computers.

How can i set the internet sharing/router and what Ip address i need to se
tup.

address automatically" is done. Router (Netgear, wired) is acting as DHCP
server (i think so).

I want to assigne each computer a static IP address so that It can easily

Have any of you guys heard of Network Monitor? The best thing to do is
to run Network Monitor, Ethereal or any other kind of packet sniffer
whilst trying to lease an IP address from a dhcp server. I'm into UNIX
but I think you Windows guys can use a command like ipconfig /release-
all ipconfig /renew-all or something like that (netsh is similar I
think). Anyway, run Network Monitor and then try to obtain an IP
address from the dhcp server by whatever means you use and see what
packets are being sent out accross the wire. That'll give you a HUGE
clue as to what's happening behinf the scenes. My 2 cents worth.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I'm running an XP SP2 box upstairs and it's
leasing an IP address from a FreeBSD box I setup as a dhpc server with
a 3 day lease and all is working okay. I also have XP laptops that
visit my network from time to time that use DHCP and they all pick up
an IP address no problems. Just plug 'em in and off they go. Been that
way for a long time - no probs.

See how ya go. Remeber, no problem is unsolvable. Some just take a
little bit longer to work out what's going on than others but DHCP is
one of the easier things in networking life. Try configuring a DNS
server or a Sendmail server. Then you'll know what hard networking
problems are!!! It's all fun and games in the end though.
