XP won't see second drive...Help, Please!

Rob

I'm using a dell desktop that came with xp installed.
Had to perform a clean install today, and afterwards my
second hard drive -- where my data is backed up -- does
not appear on "my computer".

Device manager and Disk Management both see the drive,
but will not assign a letter.

I checked all cables and jumpers. Nothing else had
changed from before the clean install. XP simply won't
recognize the drive.

I have backup data on the disk, so I don't want to
reformat.

It is NTFS, and Disk Management shows its status
as 'healthy (active)'.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Hi,

Make sure the jumper on the second HD is set to Slave.
Restart to see if it shows up. If not, go into Disk
Management and initialize it. Good luck.

Sleepless

Disconnect the old HD and put it aside

When you say "clean" install .. what exactly do you mean?
Did you partition and format the drive, or just reinstall
the OS? .. just a little clarification, so I know how to
answer .. ;) thanks

I am having a similar problem.

I have a second hard drive strictly for my music. And it has been working fine up until this morning.

I am running XP home. I had a few error pop ups when I first went to log in, i probably should have wrote down what they had said but I assumed they were from my virus protector. I guess not.

So here I am, I cannot see my second hard drive at all. Not in "My computer" or disk management.
I restarted my PC, but still it wont see my second HD.

It IS set as slave, and I've never had problems with it before. It's been set up fine for over 2 months. and just now am I having problems. I've never messed around with my PC settings lately either.

HELP???? I cannot lose my 80+ GB of music. Alot of it is unreleased and nearly impossible to get back.

Thank you!!!!
