XP won't recognize new hard drive

I just added an 80gb hard drive to my pc, which came with a 20gb hard drive,
I set the 20gb (original) hard drive to master, and the 80gb drive to slave,
and the pc boots with no errors, and the hardware manager shows both drives,
but my computer only shows the 20gb drive, so is there a setting I need to
change somewhere in order to make my computer see the new drive? Is there a
problem due to the slave drive being a larger drive than the original drive?
I can't figure it out.

Another question, does the new drive have to be installed when XP is first
installed?
Let me know my options.

You have to Partition/Format your new drive in Disk Management, only after
this does it become usable.
Type 'Disk Management' into Help
