xp won't print black

My computer won't print black from any program, icluding the test page. I
have a Canon Multipass F20 installed and have installed an HP 1210xi with the
same result. Yes geeks and nerds I have cartridges installed, the printers
are turned on, the packaging has been removed from the cartridges, the
cartridges are new; and no, I am not going to buy a new printer. This
happens with both printers. Has anybody else had this problem? How do you
fix it?

Check the cable... especially if it's an LPT connection you're using.

When did the problem start? Are these old or new printers?

You say the Canon is a multifunction? Is the HP the same? Do other
functions of the printer(s) work OK?

The cable is USB and it is connected at both ends. The problem just
started. The printers, both multifunction, are not new. They both have
worked well up to now. The HP works fine on another PC. Both units scan OK,
but in copy mode will not print black.

You do know that XP will not support multiple scanners? If they both have
scanning capability, one must go.

There is only one installed, there was only one installed at the time this
problem started. There is no problem with the scanner. The scanner works
fine. The printer will not print in black. I have tried to run a repair on
XP and I have tried HP's restore program back to August 1, 2006. It still
will not print in black.

What happens if you print a test page from the printer itself, using the
front panel buttons?

There is no front panel setting for a test page. I have checked the manual
and it doesn't mention a test page from the printer itself.

Cleaning the Print Head
Cleaning the print head
NOTE
Cleaning the print head consumes a small amount of ink. Cleaning the print
head too often reduces the amount of ink in the ink tanks.

Follow the procedure below to clean the print head from the machine:
1. Press the [Menu] button repeatedly until <MAINTENANCE> is displayed.

2. Use the [Left cursor] or [Right cursor] button to select <HEAD CLEANING>.
3. Press the [Set] button.

did you try the printer on a different computer?

HP psc 1210xi:
(hp psc 1200 series ref. guide p. 22):
print a self-test report
if you are experiencing problems with printing, before replacing the
print cartridges, you should print a Self-Test Report
1 Press and hold down the Cancel button.
2 Press the Start Copy - Color button.
A self-test report is printed for your HP PSC, which may indicate the
source of any problems you may be having.

Canon Multi-pass F20:
(Basic Guide, p. 9-6):
Printing the nozzle check pattern
The nozzle check pattern shows if each printhead nozzle is operating
properly.
Follow this procedure to print the nozzle check pattern from the machine.
1. Load letter or A4-size plain paper in the multipurpose tray.
2. Press [Menu] repeatedly until <MAINTENANCE> is displayed.

[example in manual shows < Nozzle Check > below the Maintenance menu
title, so you may have to use right or left arrows]

3. Press [Set]

If the nozzle check pattern is broken, missing, or a specific color is
not printed, see Cleaning the printhead [on the same page of the manual]
