XP won't boot - registry error

P

Paul

I recently installed on my Sager laptop an Epson cx6400
all-in-one printer & restarted to "finish installation."
XP is now stuck in a loop. Safe mode through any means
gets stuck on "agp440.sys" indefinitely. Last known good
configuration yields a black screen. Recovery through
every channel gets to a blue screen "REGISTRY_ERROR," with
a 0x00000051 stop error message at the bottom. Even when
trying to repair from the recovery boot disk, my only
choice is "1: C:\WINDOWS," which gets me the same blue
screen. Spent an hour and a half on the phone w/
Microsoft Tech Rep until past midnight - I'm in the Army
in Germany, and with a 9-hour time zone difference, it's
impossible to phone someone... please help.

Will,

All the articles from the below link are for Windows
2000. Are there any articles for XP Pro SP1 or will the
same fixes for 2000 also work???

Hi Paul

The articles for W2K should apply to XP as well. For the 0x51 Stop Code try updating your video drivers.

Couldn't attempt anything in the W2K articles because no
matter what I try (Safe Mode, Last known configuration,
Normal Mode, or even Repair or Setup Windows XP from the
recovery CD), I still get the same results - blue screen
w/ "REGISTRY_ERROR." I can't even get to DOS to even look
at my files, because there's nowhere to type anything in.
For example, running repair from the recovery CD, I'm only
given the following options: Set Up, Repair, and Quit.
When I choose repair, I can only log onto "1: C:\WINDOWS."
After I choose "1," and I get the "REGISTRY_ERROR" blue
screen. Additionally, when I try Setup, I "agree" by
pressing F8, and I get the "REGISTRY_ERROR" blue screen.
If I don't use the recovery CD and choose "Start Windows
Normally," I get the "REGISTRY_ERROR" blue screen.
Frustrations, frustrations, frustrations...

Hi Paul

Unless you have an OEM CD, see if the following helps:

Unfortunately, I can't even type anything into the
recovery console (from the article: At the Recovery
Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing
ENTER after you type each line). At the prompt from the
recovery console, I can only type "1" to select which
installed Windows I would like to select from ("1:
C:\WINDOWS")... Sorry this is so difficult; it's probably
not helping that I'm not that computer literate, either...

Hi Paul

I haven't got access to an XP Recovery CD to see what it may contain. You could contact your PC supplier to see if they can help. It is possible that they installed a hidden partition on the hard drive for such a problem as this.
