xp won't boot fully

I just had a bout with trojans and used a rootkit removal tool (along with
ewido and spyware doctor)to try ro fix it.. I've used it before with good
results. this time my pc won't boot up fully. it gets to my desktop but no
icons or taskbar. Is there a repair feature in xp pro?
i put the disc in and try to run it but it says i have a newer version of
xp. it won't go any farther. any ideas. i have sp2
PS by using task mgr i can open programs, yet no full start up.
