XP without a setup disk

My computer is missing a file so it will not boot up. i
want to try to repair the file or enter the recovery
console. Only one problem! When I purchased my computer,
it came with a restore disk not an "operating system
disk". The only thing that the restore disk does as far
as I know is to erase your hard drive and start over. How
do I enter the recovery console or repair files with out
the system disk. Also, and this is very important,I DO
NOT WANT TO RESTORE (ERASE) MY HARD DRIVE SO I NEED TO DO
THIS WITH OUT ERASING MY HARD DRIVE.
Any help would be great.

Do a restore without reformatting. I would back up all my stuff first tho.

wake up and smell the coffee!

you need to keep data backed up off the hard drive, you
have only the ability to restore system to factory
settings this is the choice you made at time of purchase.

you can if nothing else slave the hard drive to another
working system and recover the data.

this should be a lesson learned and as stated above data
must be backed up off the hard drive in the future.

There is a fair chance that they supplied the system components on the
hard disk. In which case doing Start - Run

SFC /SCANNOW

should be able to restore a missing file

I also have two restore disk, had files {dll} missing. when I ran the SFC
/SCANNOW the machine asked for the windows xp disk. the machine did not come
with the xp disk. so can I make my own xp disk from the files on the two
restore disk? I tried to copy the l386 folder and replace the old folder
with the copied folder. the folder copied but that did not fix the missing
files. I will never buy a OEM machine again. ( Microsha$t )
