XP with SP3 will not boot

Am working on a laptop running Win XP Home With SP3 installed. The laptop
will boot up only about every third try. Other time it gets to the splash
screen then goes black. When it does boot and you try to go to internet you
can go to the users "MyYahoo" home page and then will go nowhere else. If I
stop it before it gets to the home page I can go anywhere except a search
engine, then it gives a blank screen on a search result. Am I dealing with a
virus or some other kind of problem? I have run AVG on the computer and
healed 82 infections but it still does the same old thing as above. Thanks in
advance for any assistance.

virus are one issue, it sounds like you may have more than just virus
problems, ie malware and spyware.
I suggest adaware, malwarebytes, and spybot search and destroy, download,
install, and then update before scanning your pc, allow plenty of time for
scanning reboot and scan again.

Hi,
Your machine still infected and you need to clean up!
If the infection sever then a clean install of the operating system is a must.
Go through these Cleaning steps:
1... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit .

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

NB: A Repair Install will not resolve such problems...nor will reinstalling
any version of IE. A format & clean install will, however.

Thanks for your post. I will look at Mar 3 post. Did most all of what you
suggested. finally had to reformat and reinstall. Probably should have done
