XP with SP3 memory issue

O

Oviraptor

For some time now I have noticed that several applications will no
shutdown properly and will other use up memory very quickly. Also som
applications will not start if an existing copy is running.
I am getting this with several well known applications. Outlook
Winword, Powerpoint, Corel paint shop pro X2, Firefox (although th
latest version downloaded seems to have fixed it for Firefox).
I can easily stop them by using taskmaster to kill the processes, but
should not need to do this.
This was very insidious, and I cannot be sure when it started, bu
recent downloads may be a factor. I am running XP Pro, SP3, Microsof
Office 2003 fully up to date.
I have recently downloaded/installed Logmein Pro, and installed Norto
360. I am a very experienced Windows user, but this one has got m
beat.

Any suggestions please?

(BTW I always virus scan, remove adware and other spybots, and hav
active protection on all the time. I do not think it is a virus, bu
these things are never certain

Norton 360????

How much RAM?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Do you leave the computer on 24/7

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report. Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

Hope this helps.
