XP with old monitor

After upgrading to XP my computer usually comes out of sleep mode OK but a
few times all I got was wavy lines across my screen. I then had to push the
reboot button.

Someone suggested that the OLD monitor may not be completely compatible with
XP.

Does that seem like a likely reason for the lines?

If so, does anyone see a reason against leaving the computer on all day and
only powering it off overnight? Should I just get a new monitor?

I use the computer, on and off throughout the day and would hate to turn it
off and on a dozen times a day.

What if you turn the monitor off/on when you get the lines?

What make/model is this 'old' monitor?

Since even 22+ inch widescreen flat panel monitors can be had for under $200
U.S. the majority of the time - depending on exactly what this 'old monitor'
is - you'd probably gain a lot from a new monitor, yeah... But until you
give a bit more information - one cannot be sure if that is even the issue
or if it might be the video card (make/model) or cable or something even
wrong with the computer itself (other hardware, software drivers, etc.)

I doubt that the monitor is incompatible with XP. I have a NEC 4D,
around 15 years old, that works fine in XP and Vista. It does have some
problems with the POST screen with some motherboards but otherwise has
no problems.

If turning the monitor only off and on does not help, you may have more than
a Monitor problem.
If you have an older system, the power supply and the MBD, as well as the
video card are suspect. (Based upon the limited information you have given.)
The symptom you have is one of several that can be caused by failing
capacitors.

After all, the monitor should show the BIOS startup screen, or in some
cases, the Video card startup screen before windows is active.

There are some things that you can do to sleep mode that may help.
Basically, instead of going into "sleep" you can set things so that the
monitor is blanked, but the computer continues to operate in a non sleep
mode.
