XP will not start after adding more memory

I have a p III and have upgraded from ME to XP. Everything was fine using 384 mb. when I remove a 128 module and insert another 256 to get memory up to 512, I get the black screen with the "windows failed to start. maybe due to ...... then safe, safe w/network, last known or windows normal. No matter what I choose it returns back to the same screen. I have tried all memory modules and all are ok. I just cannot put 2 256 modules in and get a normal xp boot???

Maybe your motherboard's supported maximum is 384mb.

Do you know the actual motherboard make/model? If not get
EVEREST from www.lavalys.com and it will report on such
details. You can then download the mobo manual and/or get
to www.crucial.com and get details about what kind of memory
is supported.

Your mobo or even just the BIOS can be limiting as to
maximum memory supported and there can be limitations on
which slots will support what size and type of memory. Also
the memory must match in all specs, not just MB size, there
are other settings that can block booting.

Greetings --

It's absolutely essential that any new RAM module(s) be fully
compatible with both the motherboard and/or any other RAM module(s)
already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes jumper
switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for new RAM
configurations. Consult your motherboard's manual or the
manufacturer's web site for specific instructions and compatibility
requirements.

Jake,

Is this by chance a GATEWAY Computer? I had the same
problem while trying to add ram to this GATEWAY! Finally
gave up, and scraped the junk.

I had a similar problem recently when I built a new PC.

I bought a kit of mobo, ram, processor etc, built that no
problems at all. Added another 512mb of ram bought new
from PC World (same ram as the mobo kit supplied i.e cheap)
and as soon as that was fitted to my PC, the PC wouldn't
boot.

I went back to PC world and exchanged it for exactly the
same ram, took this home, fitted it, it worked for 4 days
then died. I took this back to PC world again and paid the
extra £30 quid for the more expensive ram, fitted this it
works fine and has for about two months now.

It depends on how much ram the motherboard
can take. In this case, it looks like the P3 only
goes to 384. And anymore it doesnt boot XP.

You'll have to find out the brand/model of the mobo
and find out the maximum amount of ram it can handle

Basic rule: Never allow Windows to boot until you have verified your
new RAM is working properly, preferably by running MemTest86 on all
tests either overnight, or until at least one pass of all tests.

Free RAM testers that don't suck:

www.memtest86.com
www.simmtester.com

Please dudes, tattoo the above rule on your RAM-installing arm :)
