XP will not open any files

I had Norton 2001 on the Laptop (Compac). I upgraded to Norton 2006. On
install, Norton said I did not have a windows installer and loaded one for
me. I removed the 2001 Norton and at the end of Norton 2006 install, it
stopped. Now when I reboot, I get the background picture, a start button. I
can launch Explorer and Outlook. I can cruse the net. I cannot get any other
programs to open. No folders, no files. At the “RUN†prompt I can type
“msconfig†and I get a message telling me there is no program associated. I
have used the "repair" function on the XP disk, but it did nothing to help.
The same problem happens in “Safe Mode†as well. Any suggestions? Anyone else
ever see this?

By removing Norton 2001 after installing Norton 2006, you have probably
removed some common files that Norton 2006 needs. You should of uninstalled
Norton 2001 before upgrading.

You can try and uninstall Norton 2006 by downloading and running Norton's
removal tool
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...sf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

Personally, if I managed to remove it, I wouldn't reinstall it. Use a free
antivirus such as AVG or Avast together with a firewall such as Zonealarm.
Uses much less resources, will be a lot less troublesome and you don't have
to worry about renewing your subscription to get the updates.

Hi Tony and thank you for the response,

Actually I posted wrong. I shut down the 206 install and then removed 2001.
Believe it or not, but I got ahold of a service tech with Norton on my first
try…it was 30 minutes of wait time, but we went trough every process on his
computer and it is still acting the same way. I have already downloaded the
Norton removal tool. No luck. The system seems to allow downloads and I can
hut through back door (Command Prompt) and see the files. The XP operating
system just will not execute any other exe files. When I go to “My Computerâ€
and then click on the C: drive all it tells me is the volume. When I go
through IE Explorer I can see the correct “Icons†for each program and
file…it still will not execute the install or open commands.

I can drag and drop the files to another folder, but unless I type out the
command to open the folder, they will not open. The search feature seems to
work, but again no opening.

Try running sfc /scannow from the start/run. You can read up on it at
