XP will not install

I removed windows ME , and attempted to install XP home on my pc. the disc
won't start up, and when i push the start tab to run a command, the button
depresses, and freezes. It is driving me mad. I think there is a virus
because it wouldn't let me fully install Norton Systemworks. Is there a way,
having already removed my OS, to scan for problem, re-format, and install XP?
I have to have it for the wireless router that came with my new laptop. Win
ME doesn't support the router so I must upgrade. Please help me!!

Thank you for the reply!

one more thing. i basically want to just re-do everything, but what files to
i need to save as far as my internet connection? (cable modem)

i don't think i have any way to re-install that info. they came to my house
and did it for me, so i have no discs.
