XP will not cold boot

When cold booting Windows XP the Microsoft Windows XP
screen comes up for a few seconds and then changes to a
black screen and never completes booting.
I then press the computer reset button and a screen
saying that Windows did not start successfully and gives
several options. The only option which will then complete
is the "Start Windows from the last known good boot" or
something to that effect.
The computer then runs just fine until the next time it
is booted.
I recently ran SP2 but can't say for sure that the
problem started at that particular time.
Hopefully someone out there will have a solution.

<LOL> No meant, that you seem to post the same three links within each
reply you make. Adding them to your sig, would just save you time?)

Did a system restore and everything was fine for a few
days. Now it is back to the same problem. Last night it
took about 10 minutes to boot and this morning it would
not boot at all until hitting the reset button and then
selecting "boot to the last known good configuration of
windows"
Any other inspiration out there?

You *might* have a flaky hard drive.

Run chkdsk (drive letter) from a command prompt,
reboot, and watch the procedure complete.

Then, check the results in Event Viewer>>Application.

If it found issues, do it again BUT specify the /f
option to fix. (chkdsk (drive letter) /f).
