XP will not boot after SP1a installed

I have a KT Ultra mainboard with VIA Apollo KT400
chipset. AMD Athlon XP 2200 CPU. System runs great until
I install XP SP1a. After the SP install XP will not boot.
It hangs on the Windows XP start. The blue bar stops
moving. If I try safe mode it hangs after mup.sys. I
tried formating and reinstalling XP 3 time with different
video cards,Hard drives. I think this is a problem
between the main board and SP1. What do I do to fix this.
Any help woulb be great.
