XP will not address CD Rom, CD RW or floppy

Since reinstalling XP using setup disks provided by HP
the system will see the above but will not address them.

If a CD is left in the tray and the system re booted then
the device will work, but only once, if the machine is
not re booted then access to the CD is not available.

Have installed an external CD RW with backpack driver and
this performs exactly as the others.

Yes I have had this exact problem ... If you boot up with
a data CD in the drive things are ok I have tried all of
the possible fixes .. including one put up by MS however
in the end I was forced to RE-Install XP to get full
functionality back. The problem you describe can be
caused by a conflict between Adaptec Direct CD and Roxio
and I have discovered ...the same issue can occur when
using Nero and Roxio was installed and removed... I am
sure that more events can cause this happening... M/S is
of little help on this and as I discovered my final
solution was to buckle and reinstall XP.
