XP will load but User Desktop Won't

Hi everyone,

I have been wrestling with my PC all morning. The problem is that though
Windows XP does load (and without any visable error<grins>) when you log in
to a User account (including the Admin account) it will not load any of the
desktop tools. That is no taskbar, no icons, and the windows button on the
keyboard will not work. I can access everything on the PC via the
ctl-alt-delete.

I have attempted:
System restore but it does nothing.
Using the upgrade via CD Boot to basically reinstall the OS, but it tells me
there is an unfinished installation to log off, allow installation and try
again...doing this I cannot find any unfinished installation nor does it seem
to try to install anything.
Ran msi clean up utility and there are no open msi's at all (probably a
whole NEW problem doing that<grin> )

Thank you for your time and consideration, I sure hope someone has a clue!

try two things: find your command prompt, open it up
& type: chkmbr/? it should give you a list.

second: click on start button, then click run & type:
/scannow then enter. this will check for your files.

you may want to go to the command prompt for additional
help, just type: help. here are some other commands:
chkdsk/? chkdir/? chkntfs/? copy/? disable/? enable/?
fdisk/? fixboot/ fixmbr/? format/? logon/? map/? mkdir/?
more/? rmdir/? rename/? systemroot/? sfc/? ipconfig/?
ping/? finger/?

these are just a few out of hundreds more.

Hi Phillip,

thank you for your reply, but no taskbar means no start button. I did
attempt to run this from the New Task (Run) selection of the Windows Task
manager File menu, but recieved a "not found"

I also accessed the cmd.exe in the same manner and from the command prompt I
recieved no list from the chkmbr/? command. It returned unrecognized.

Thank you for trying though.

Try pressing Alt+Ctrl+Del to bring up Task Manager, select the Applications
tab, click New Task... and type explorer.exe.
This should load all desktop icons and the start menu. It also works if you
terminate a non-responding program and the icons and start menu disappear.

Hope it works :)

Hi Ricardo,

Thank you for your response but I tried that right off the bat. According
to the task manager there are no unresponsive programs and nothing I have
found so far will break it out of what appears to be a infinite loop.

I believe (after talking to my husband) that during an attempted
installation upgrade of Quicktime he allowed a trojan blocker we use to
interfere with some but not ALL of the installation. I have tried to use the
repair feature of XP and it will not run, the warning is that there is a
program installation in progress that needs to complete first. I have
restarted and found no such installation trying to work...so I am pretty much
out of ideas now :-/

Right now I am looking at a full format and reinstall of the OS (man that's
a drag).
Thank you again,
Anny
