XP WIFI Network Visibility Works in 1 Direction Only

P

Paul

I am using a Belkin WIFI USB adapter to run a home
wireless network.

My PC runs windows XP home with fixed IP address
(192.168.0.1) and can view and open files on my son's PCs
shared folders. His PC also runs Windows XP home and
uses automatic IP addressing (before changing the Belkin
drivers his PC only worked on a fixed IP address). He
can access the Internet through my PCs DSL broadband dial
up connection (so long as his PC uses automatic IP
addressing). Both PCs can ping each other and 'net view'
functions from both PCs.

However, when he uses explorer to view network
neighbourhood he can see the network, my computer and my
shared folders and shared printers but when he tries to
open my folders he gets the following error message:

\\Studypc\\SharedDocs is not accessible. You might not
have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. Not enough server storage is
available to process this command.

I have tried disabling all firewalls and all security
settings but still no joy. I have tried MS knowledge
base but cannot find an explanation. Both of us are set
as administrators on our own PCs and as far as I know all
shared permissions have been set.

Any thoughts?

This error indicates that you are falling foul of the IRPStackSize bug.

The problem is on the machine you are attempting to connect to,
not the machine where you see the error message.
( ie on your machine, not your son's. )

On the computer you are attempting to connect to ( yours ),
Check the event viewer for an event ID 2011.

Usual fix :
You need to fix a parameter called IRPStackSize

On the computer you are attempting to connect to,
Set the IRPStackSize back to the default (15 ).
Perform the following steps:

1. Start the registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\lanmanserver\parameters.
3. Double-click IRPStackSize
(or if this registry setting doesn't exist, create it of
type DWORD and ensure the case is correct).
4. Change the base to decimal, set the value to 15, and click OK.
5. Reboot the computer.

Norton AV is usual suspect for breaking it.

There's a KB article about this, too.
