XP Welcome Screen Looping

T

When XP is restarted, Welcome screen appears with proper
user accounts but when you click on any of the user
accounts the setting/desktop try to load but reverts back
to the welcome screen. Cannot get to any user account
desktops to do anything on the PC.

Hi

After the next reboot, keep tapping the F8 key, to see if you can access a
screen that has 'Last Known Good Configuration' as an option. Try that to
see if you can boot into Windows normally.

Thanks for suggestion but still did not work. I have tried safe mode as
well. Problem still exists. This problem occured out of the blue?

Good suggestion. My only problem is that the software that came with my
system only has a recovery disk and when trying to reinstall it creates
another OS on the PC. So now I have to choose which version. The version
that points to all my applications, files, system hardware configurations,
etc. Is the version I'm having welcome sceeen looping issues with. The
other version gets me into the desktop but no real functionality. I'm trying
to contact the system manufacturer to see if I can get a version that will
allow me to do an in-place upgrade.

From looking at these boards recently there are lots of people with this
problem. ANy thoughts on root cause?

See if this can help. This can be the result of removing spyware:

This problem turns out to be that the Winlogon userinit entry is being
set to "wsaupdater.exe," and not "userinit.exe,".

If you have a regular XP CD (not a maker's restore one)

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead
of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password
requested is blank, and TAB over.

Change the C:\Windows prompt to C:\Windows\System32 with
CD System32
and then
COPY userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

Reboot into Safe Mode and modify with Start - Run - regedit.exe, open
to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT
\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

and double click userinit in the right pane, to change from
wsaupdater.exe, to userinit.exe,
