XP vs 98 current thinking?

like scanreg /restore in 9X?
oh, another thing that pushed me to xp is the 9x registry max
out. At some point, my reg got too big and scanreg/ fix
doesn't run properly anymore (hang at 94 %). A not-widely-
known fix for that is to download something called
"regoptfix". I don't know where to get it anymore but I
remember getting it at a forum call VirtualDoc or
VirturalDoctor or something like that. Anyhow, that became
part of the reason for me to do a clean install XP after I got
a free version from my company.

I moved from 98se to XP recently and have not noticed a big difference
except perhaps it's ability to reset itself instead of the BSOD.
I have to change computers again and it has been suggested that since I
use a lot of software/freeware/Firefox/tbird/etc, 98 works better. It
will be a clean install, whichever I choose.
Views please from those with experience of both.

I fix computers and it it much easier to use win xp pro
especially for more drivers supported and networking.

My impression is that you are home user without a
network with a software focus rather than hardware
peripherals connecting with USB. Win98se USB
support sucks in comparison to win xp pro.

How many USB devices do you have connected
to your computer? If the answer is one or none
then win98se will suffice.

Even better - System Restore. And the XP version is very much
improved over what was in WindowsMe.

Windows 98SE is pretty much unsupported these days, especially with
regards to new hardware development.

It will not be too much longer before software and/or accessories that
will not install or run on Windows 98 becomes quite common, just as it
is today with regard to Windows 95 and very often with regard to
Windows 98 Original as well.

Microsoft Office 2003 is one of the first of what will soon be a long
line of software products that will require Windows XP, or at least
Windows 2000.

I am dual booting 98SE and Win2K. 99% of the time I use 98SE, in fact
the kids can't even boot to 2K. This is handy to keep private stuff,
programs that wont run on 98SE and backups separate. When 98 crashes I
can boot to 2K and fix 98. With a medium to large hard drive you will
never miss the space. Oh, about XP....if I had it, I would turn off
the eye candy, turn off system restore(if it slowed down my old PIII),
switch to the old style search, and end up with something looking alot
like Win2K, except for the product registration thing.

Can I come back as the original poster?
The reason the question went to a.c.f as well as 24H, is that I lurk and
post at a.c.f a bit and know who to trust and otherwise )
AND as I think I said, I use as much freeware as I can (as opposed to
parting with money for something similar)
BTW A few hours on from the original post, there seems to be no
consensus except that as hardware is replaced it will become ,more
difficult to find W98 compatible stuff, otherwise use what you like
best.

I got bored with the 24H crowd a while back and now never see anything
x-posted there. :)

Your question was about 98 and XP, not freeware.
And you didn't have follow-ups set.

Was just curious.

I don't go to acf any more due to all the OT

As someone who has helped me in the distant past ,thats a shame because most
OTs are ONTs as they are related to freeware or are a welcome relief to
repeated links......plus i think you used to post links to the smallest
freeware imagineable :)

We've had this discussion before here, can't remember with who though,
adn the general concensus was that most found Win98se more stable than
XP. This has certainly NOT been my experience. I recommend all of my
customers move to XP when '98 problems get too numerous. If they have
the right hardware, they are far better off using XP that a continuous
re-install cycle imposed by '98.

I'm certainly not as experienced as some of the people that post in ACF, but I had
to respond to "how awful 98 is". I installed W98SE in 1997 and have been running
fine ever since. It's only in the past year that I stopped installing much, so for
years I installed and uninstalled, yet no crashes. Only in the past year or so do
I get a BSOD maybe once in 2 months. Something that helps is I cold boot every
morning.

So I'm quite happy with 98, no plans to go to XP. In my Task Manager, there are
now 9 processes running, in several friends XP machines, I see 30-40 processes
running.

For me, moving from 98se to XP immediately eliminated all of the BLUE SCREEN
OF DEATH computer crashes. Now, my computer NEVER freezes or locks up.
But, I have been having a few other problems as of recent.
So far, I'm 100% for XP.

That is a really neat trick, especially since Win98SE did not even get
into Beta testing until late in 1998 and was not publicly released
until 1999. :)

For Windows 2000 users, Windows XP is pretty much "Windows 2000 Second
Edition".

However many of the "under the hood" additions and enhancements are
pretty important, especially the improved support for hardware,
multimedia apps, and games.
