XP VPN Ports

Hi

Which ports does Windows XP Pro's VPN server use?
I'm trying to set up a vpn to a work pc, which is behind a router, so I need
the ports for port forwarding.
I'm currently forwarding ports 1723 and 47, but when I connect, my client
machine sits here saying "Verifying username and password" until it times
out... I imagine I'm missing some ports...
I had a bit of a search around, but couldn't find anything specific to XP's
server....

Thanks,

TCP Port 1723 and the router must pass GRE Protocol 47 traffic. Some routers call the later "PPTP
Pass Through" or "VPN Pass Through".

What router? Have you checked the manufacturers support web pages for help with this or the users
manual?

TCP Port 1723 and the router must pass GRE Protocol 47 traffic. Some routers call the later "PPTP
Pass Through" or "VPN Pass Through".

PPTP Pass-Through on most of those home routers is outbound only,
meaning that you can PPTP outbound, but not inbound.

I've had a number of routers with TCP/1723 forwarded to the router and
it failed - linksys in particular. It seems that some routers want you
to configure TCP/1723 and TCP/47 inbound to the server, others want
TCP/UDP/1723 and TCP/UDP/47 inbound to the server, and others have a
nice PPTP inbound rule that you can assign to the IP of the server.

Either way, the PPTP Pass-Through is for outbound connections, from your
workstation to the office.

Take a look at the vendors website, for the server side, and make sure
that it specifies the setup for IN-BOUND PPTP sessions, not just PPTP.

I have a client with a Linksys WRT54GX wireless router.

He is running Windows XP Pro and setup a VPN Server

I've remotely configured the router to use PPTP Port 1723 BOTH (UDP and TCP)
and forwarded it to the IP Address of the VPN Server

I've also set IPSPec port 47 BOTH (UDP and TCP) and forwarded it to the IP
Address of the VPN Server.

Do you have any routers of the WRT54GX and should I just trial and error try
the UDP on one and TCP on the other?
