xp vpn client much slower than win98 vpn client

I have a windows 2000 Server on the small site installed. It is the domain
controller and the RRAS server (actually it is the only server we have).

Different users connect from their home to this server.
They use the Microsoft client (created from the Remote connection wizard) to
connect.
There is no problem with Windows 98 clients, but the majority of the Windows
XP clients (with SP 1 installed)are very slow.
It take a lot of time to open/close any Office files (even for an empty Word
documents it takes 1 to 2 minutes).
The copy of files in explorer is also slow.
I checked that:
There is no antiviruses activated,
DNS parameters are correct,
No scans for Scheduled Tasks activated
The ADSL bandwidth is the same.

Any idea is welcome,
Nicolas

One thing you might want to check is whether trying to access resources by
IP is fine. Things might get delayed if the preferred DNS is different from
the DNS settings at your office.
