XP & Vista same HD

Cheers,

I've Vista installed in Hard Drive C which I have only one logical disk.

Now I've realized that BF2 & 2142 don't work well with my laptop (Dell
Inspiron 9300, 2GB RAM) and I'd like also install XP with dual boot feature...

Is that possible (to install XP to same partition and different directory
f.e. winxp) or do I have to make a new partition with Partition Magic...
However I wouldn't like to make a new partition...

You'll need to repartition your drive.

Pasi:

Try to keep operating systems on their own partitions. Installing two
operating systems prescribes at least two partitions. This keeps them from
overwriting etc. etc. which can cause problems. Separate folders on the same
partition is probably not good enough even for copies of the very same
operating system let alone two different ones.

Same advice 'don't do it' separate partitions only Free Ranish has been
recommended here. Haven't used personally, so no recommendation. Used from
a floppy so you need one.

Biig problems now....

I made new partition for XP... but... now I am not able to choose Vista &
XP... because boot.ini tells only xp's location...

However I edit boot.ini and add also vistas section like this:

;
;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.
;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.
;
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Vista"
/USENEWLOADER /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /USENEWLOADER /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN

But now when I am trying boot Vista it says that in can't load hal.dll from
/system32 directory... even it is over there...

PLZ Help!!!

I'm trying to tell my needs more specificly...

I have one physical HD.

There is three partitions... 1) 31MB Fat EISA-things... 2) Vista partition
3) XP partition...

First I have only 1 & 2 partition but then I resize 2) partition and create
3rd...

Vista was at 2nd partition...

then I installed XP SP2 to 3rd partition but now I am not able to make dual
boot...

Questions:

- First, what I have to do that I am able to boot to Vista because that is
more important at the moment

- Second, when I resolved that problem, what I have to do to make dual-boot
possible...

It seems that XP was overwritten something on Vista partition....?

Download VistaBootPro (Google it) and set up the Vista MBR. Alternately you
can use the Vista install DVD, but I haven't used it. There is something
about repair startup on it.

boot.ini is not used to start Vista. Vista boot calls ntldr which uses that
file when booting to a legacy drive only.
