XP/Vista networking problem

I recently had XP running on my laptop and PC and they shared an internet
connection through an ethernet cable.
I now have a new PC that runs Vista and the laptop wont aquire an ip
address, so i cant access the internet off my laptop through my Vista system.
I have tried to give it an IP address manually, this connected the systems
but still no internet access.
Please someone help...i have spent so much time this week and im starting to
hate Vista!

Have you setup Internet Connection Sharing on Vista? Here is a help

Hi Michael,
Yes i have set up the ICS on vista...the XP shows that its connected to the
vista (gateway appears) but the internet still isnt working, i have disabled
the anti virus software and still nothing.
Do i need to click anything under my Local Area Connection Properties >
sharing tab > settings> theres a whole list of services to share e.g: FTP
server etc ...should they all by clicked?
this step wasnt mentioned in the windows help section

No, those refer to sharing the other way -- services behind the gateway that
should be available to the Internet. Basically, port forwarding.

Just to double-check, in the Network & Sharing Center, under Manage Network
Connections, you should see your outgoing interface marked as "Shared".

If all this is set up properly, the next question is what the client is
actually seeing. Please run ipconfig /all from the XP laptop and post.
Also, you might check the firewall settings on the Vista machine; you should
have "Internet Connection Sharing" enabled there.

Hi,
I am part of ICS team. In order to repro the issue in our labs, will
appreciate if you give us following information:

Are you using default firewall or some other firewall like Windows Live
one-care firewall?
If you are using Windows firewal, in exceptions tab, are you seeing
exceptions rules enabled for "Internet Connection Sharing"?
If firewall exception rules are enabled for ICS, please check if static
IP address is assigned to the adapter (in ICS host) that is connected to XP
network.
If you know how to use network sniffer, please check whether ICS host
machine receiving any DHCP packets from ICS clients and any replies being
sent by it.

Hi All,

I am having a slightly similar problem with ICS on Windows Vista Business.
I have a static IP configured on my PC and internet connection runs
perfectly as standalone. As soon as I enable ICS on host I loose the internet
connection on host. FYI according to the network map shown in network center
a red cross appears on the link between Network and Internet.
Ravi: I am using default windows firewall but I cannot seem to find this
option of ICS under exceptions tab of firewall so I am not sure if this
enabled or not. Could you comment on these issues?

Hi,
ICS Firewall exceptions are only for allowing ICS clients to get access to
internet. One should be able to access internet from ICS host even when
firewall exceptions are not present.

Please check if the static IP address configured on the adapter (that is
connected to internet) has changed after ICS is enabled. If static IP of
internet adapter has not changed, are you using any P2P software? Recently a
problem is reported that connectivity is lost after several hours if P2P and
ICS are used together. We are currently investigating that issue. But one
should be able to access internet from ICS client even when this P2P issue is
hit.

Hi again!

I am not using any P2P software. ICS is being done with standard Vista
installation without any additional software. I tried to to do the sharing
again using different combinations but the problem still exists. The sharing
process has not problems but as soon as I plug the network cable in client
either laptop or WiFi router, I loose the internet connection on host
computer (desktop). I don't see the static IP is changing during/after the
process. Anyhow, I am pasting the contents of ipconfig /all below after the
internet connection is lost. Please help fix this problem since I am getting
annoyed with it now!

Almost 10 days and no reply from the ICS team!!!
Seriously.. after browsing through the internet and finding the problems of
ICS without any solution everywhere, it seems to me that Microsoft is
ignoring this error... or should I consider this the WOW of VISTA?!?!?!?

Can someone really provide a solution here?
