XP / Vista Network

I purchased a HP laptop w/Vista and am trying to connect it to my network.
Following the regular procedures, my main XP machine can't see the new laptop
and the Vista laptop nor the the other way around. I purchased the Belkin
transfer cable and software and that fails to connect the new Vista laptop to
either of my other XP computers using the USB cable they provide either! Any
ideas? Should I remove Norton from the Laptop?
