XP Upgrade

I have a customer who bought a computer with a pirated copy of XP Home
installed. He didn't realize this until he could no longer get updates. I
told him to go out and buy a genuine copy of XP Home and install it. He
bought the upgrade disk because he didn't want to lose any of his data. He
went through the upgrade install and when it was finished it would not take
the new product ID. He had to enter the old product ID. How can we install
the genuine copy and get it to use the product ID that came with it?

First off one doesn't enter a Product ID they enter a Product Key. While
this may seem like a matter of semantics it isn't as one doesn't enter
Product IDs. Product IDs are generated after an install and are typically
displayed in the System Properties. Ensure he is entering the correct
Product Key for his new version of Windows XP.

The Windows XP installation process doesn't ask for a Product Key at the end
of installation. It asks for it around the middle of installation so if he
is being asked for some type of Product ID or code at the end of the
installation process something else is happening. Perhaps he should just do
a clean install. He can do a clean install using the Upgrade version
providing he has a copy of Windows 98/Me/NT or 2000 available to pop intot
he CD-Rom to satisfy the brief request for a qualifying product.

Sometimes one does mitake during typing G and 6; B and 8;S and 5.
If that not be the case then ask him for a clean installation.
