On <every> shutdown xp tells me it is installing 1 of 3 updates...takes
forever..is this normal? Also, am having very poor performance: slow
processing, applications ffrequently not responding specifically, Paint, Adobe
Photoshop Elements, Outlook Express (default mail until I get Office
updated), partial windows opening then gray screens (1/2 gray/1/2 text or
just cutoff text), cascading frozen IE windows, trying to navigate back using
History button does not work-nothing happens when I click on addresses. Am
unable to install Office 03 Update. I recieve "Installation ended early
because of error" no other infomation is given. I have followed maintainence
instructions for de fragmenting and freeing up disk space, have recycled
modem repeatedly and purchased registry cleaner (do not know what to expect
with registry cleaner but on initial use had over 300 erorrs that needed to
be corrected; on second run 2 weeks later had 170..I always have one item
that remains uncorrected-registry cleaner is unable to fix it. I have a
1.73GHz processor with 512 RAM
44.6 GB free space, total size 55.6...any help will be <greatly> appreciated!

Hello . If you think it is big mess now, everythings is slow and if you
didn't reinstall your Windows for long time , you may wish to do a back up of
your data(pictures, music, documents, important software install packs) and
format hard drive and reinstall Windows. This would be the fastest and the
easiest in your case ,I think.

For the reinstallation of Windows you need your Windows CD, the disks with
drivers of all your hardware(every hardware comes with cd with drivers) and
your back-ups.
For short description how to reinstall Windows, please visit my web-site
http://pandaman.my.contact.bg/install_Windows.htm

If you are not sure you can do it,please take your computer to a *reputable*
professional computer store and ask IT specialists for help.It is no
shame.<And don't use registry fixers ,my personal experience shows they can
do things worse than they are >

And adding my $.02 of 8 years experience. Create a separate [mines 30 gigs] system partition C:/ and either use the built in backup program with XP [PRO ? I have it], or an imaging program, and something [separatedrive or storage] that you can store a clone of your system partition.

I have 152 gig and a 300 gig D:\ data drive. the 152 is 30 gigs C:\ , and122 gigs E:\. install all programs that you can to E:\. and as much of everything else to E:\

The C:\ partition is only about 15 gigs in use, but I've only been using this dual partition operation for a few weeks now since the LAST big crash. I expect 15 is barely enough. you could probably get by with a 20 gig C:\

1 partition and NO cloned backup of C:\ requires a full install of OS andevery thing in use at time of crash. You really can't expect much from restore.

And I think I need another data drive cause I ran out of space with a problem last week of an undeleteable folder.

Mentioning it now, because what he said is true. You're looking at a complete reinstall of the OS and all programs in use before your current problems. And stay away from registry fixers.

A small system partition will make it simpler next time something goes bad, and something going bad is one thing you can count on.

Oh I won't know if the XP backup program is any good until my next crash. But I suspect an imaging program is good. Just haven't found one I like yet.

Sorry if the instructions are difficult for you.I have tried to create them
really easy but unfortunately , it is not possible. :)
Well , I think you should take your computer to a professional who will do
the job for your.He/She will reinstall Windows and install drivers and things
like that but they don't know what info to back up so before that you have to
do the back-ups.

How to do it? Use a burning software.Your computer needs CD-RW or DVD-RW to
write the info on a CD/DVD . Windows XP with SP2 has built-in burning
software by Roxio but you can also use Nero products-really popular and
widely-used.

You must give a good _______ to the engineer who has installed the OS. May be
he has skip some files while installing your OS.

Anyhow, first problem can be solved by Turn-Off Automatic Updates. This can
be done through right clicking My Computer - Properties. Turn Off Automatic
Updates.

You can increase the performance of your PC by doing some good tricks. You
don't have to do them as you have 512MB of RAM with a good processor. But if
you do not want to re-install windows then try this.

1. Right Click My Computer - Properties
2. Click Advanced
3. Click Settings under Peformance
4. Click Adjust for Best Performance

Apply the changes. You will see that look of your Windows is as much as like
Windows 98.

Now, right Click on Desktop and choose Properties.

Under Theme choose Windows XP.

Click Appearance Tab and then click Effects.
Un-check all the Effect except Clear Type.

Click Settings and Choose 16 Bit Color.

There are lot more tricks but first tell me if above one works.
