XP Updates lock mouse/cpu approx 5 min from START

I found some others experiencing similar locking after
installing Updates by doing a Web Search. Apparently, it
is from an update that locks the computer. The ? is if
indeed this is the problem, which one(s)are it? If this
is not the problem what is it. Here is my dilemma as
posted a couple days ago:

In Jan. 2002, I purchased a Compaq Presario 700Z with AMD
Athlon 4 1.2 GHz processor with 384 MB SDRAM which had
been running fine until the other day when I added a
Network connection with a Linksys 2.4GHz notebook wireless
adapter card for 802.11g. (This problem doesn't occur on
my 2 desktop Compaq Presarios, 1.7 GHz Pentium with 512 mg
RAM or 400 MHz Pentium with 128 MG RAM which have Intel
and not the AMD Athlon processor in the laptop.)

I downloaded from Windows Update the cumulative Service
Pack 1 and then all of the other critical updates. I also
installed Norton Anti Virus 2004 Professional Edition.
After about 5 minutes after restarting the computer, not
only did the mouse lock but I cannot do anything or even
control alt delete. After unplugging the power supply I
reinstalled the original restore of Windows XP and the
computer worked fine. I reinstalled the network adapter
and software which worked fine. Then I reinstalled Norton
Anti Virus 2004 Pro. I downloaded the Service Pack 1 and
it worked fine. But after downloading the additional
updates, the problem resurfaced and I had to do another
restore. The computer is fine again.

What is causing this locking? I am skeptical to download
the Service Pack 1 and all of the other critical updates
to Windows XP until I find out what is causing this to
occur and if there is a fix for this.

Thank you for any assistance you can offer on this matter.
