XP "system restore disks" - capable of restoring JUST some apps?& other ?'s <long>

dave

have sony vaio running XP home, and on it are numerous sony-original
factory-installed apps (some VERY huge, eg: quicken, picture gear
studio, etc) I've never used and may never use, _however_ I'd like to
keep them "just in case".

I also have (in the computer originally and still there) the 80gb drive,
_plus_ I have a brand new W.D. 120gb (with the 8 mb cache) in the
computer, all formatted and hooked up, but never yet used for anything.
goal here is to have a 'faster, cleaner, better organized' computer,
therefor, I'd like to EITHER:

a. drag, (in their entirety, if such is possible) the UNused apps from
the 80 gb TO the 120gb drive for <what amounts to essentially> "dead
storage" purposes (quite a waste of my new, bigger hard drive,
possibly?), OR

b. just use XP 'add/remove programs' to delete the factory-original apps
I hardly ever use, IF those apps (all sony installed) are "fully
restoreable" TO the drive =USING= the original *system*retore*disks*,
when (and IF) I decide I want to use 'em, again, ever...

c. or, maybe I'd be better off dragging, copying, or somehow
'transferring' <sp?> the entire content, including the XP OS, from the
'old' 80 gb TO the new 120gb (assuming the newer drive is 'faster'), and
use the 80gb drive for "dead storage", and maybe cache, scratch, and
temp file purposes.

I don't mind reformatting some and/or partitioning, and working with
screwdrivers and stuff. part of the goal here is to spend as little$ as
possible doing this 'reorganization' (so buying an 'app' to accomplish
the transfer task is 'out')

if it matters, my main "drive space killing" use for the computer,
generally, is for storage of my digital camera photos (hi-rez jpegs),
with the balance 'everyday web-browsing' and other plain-jane stuff,
realtime stock charting/tracking, etc.

all suggestions <general or more specific> and comments/ideas on the
above possible procedures much appreciated. thank you

Just thinking out loud? Read the docs that came with the restore disks.

those docs are gonna suggest partition sizes or tell me which drive is
faster, or better suited for a particular purpose? or how to move my OS
and/or apps drive to drive using what (if anything)? I know there are
minds here -much- more experienced in these matters.

by the way, never having used one (on a windows machine) I'm fairly
clueless as to how "recovery disks" work, generally. I've looked at the
_very_ sparse info that came with the recovery disks (amounts to a half
page in owners manual) - pretty sketchy. do some 'fragments' of the
original app still need to be 'on' the drive for it to be 'fully
restored'? (in my world, for eg, to 'restore' a car, first you've gotta
HAVE the car -to- restore it). so, would 'system recovery' disks be more
accurately named "OS and applications install disks from scratch" or
'creator disks' rather than restore disks, in the traditional sense of
the word?

thanks for educating me :)

Dave:
I have a SONY VAIO - it came with 3 System Recovery CDs, 3 Application
Recovery CDs, and a CD for WordPerfect Office 2002. My guess (from reading
the owner's manual) is that you could uninstall the software you don't need
or want, and then use the Application Recovery CDs to reinstall the
applications - start with CD #1.

"Seven wise men
With Knowledge so fine
Created the pussy
To their design

First was a butcher
Smart with a wit
Using a knife
He gave it a slit

Second was a carpenter
Strong and bold
With a hammer and chisel
He gave it a hole

Third was a tailor
Tall and thin
With a piece of red velvet
He lined it within

Fourth was a hunter
Short and stout
With a piece of fox fur
He lined it without

Fifth was a fisherman
Nasty as hell
He threw in a fish
And gave it a smell

Sixth was a preacher
Who's name was Magee
He touched it and blessed it
And said it could pee

Last came a sailor
Dirty little runt
He sucked it and ****ed it
And called it a ****"
