XP startup

I downloaded the service pack 2 and when I rebooted I got
the message that <windows root> system32\ntoskrnl.exe was
missing. I put in the XP disk and was able to boot but
then I shut down and restarted and now get the message
that the following file is missing or corrupt,
\winnt\system32\config\system.sav. Was this a problem of
downloading the service pack or a coincidence?

Where did you get SP2?
Were you a beta tester?
Do you have an MSDN subscription?

Those are the ONLY two legitimate sources at this time. If you got it from
one of these, then you already know what the appropriate support channels
are. If you got it from any other source, then you likely also got some
additional things you don't want. Never trust unofficial sources, they
rarely act in your best interest, most act in their own best interest. You
may need to format and install clean to recover, but first try the steps
