XP Startup screen freezing

i just recently upgraded this computer with:
an ECS motherboard (L7S7A2)
Athlon XP 2000+ cpu
kingston 512 DDR PC2100.
this setup has been working 2 weeks without any problems whatsoever... until
last week..
i was playing with a naughty usb device, and it crashed my computer a lot. i
eventually gave up on it.... however after i un-installed it i was still
crashing (which never happened before messing with it) and locking up in
windows. now however, i cannot get past the windows startup screen without a
freeze (i can get into safe mode...).

i tried reinstalling XP... without a format, i selected the option just to
over-write the old XP with a new install, and hopefully not lose any data
outside of the C:\windows directory...

unfortunantly when it reinstalled, and booted up again for the first time
into the XP startup screen, it crashed, and is still crashing... yet i can
still get into safe mode (and see an un-set up version of windows)...

i dont quite see why, if its the usb installation that started my troubles
(it started at that time), it should continue even after ive reinstalled
windows.

another thing i should mention is that once when toying with the naughty usb
device, it not only crashed my computer, but made my CMOS invalid. i reset
it to factory defaults at the time, and later went through the options and
reselected what i wanted.

any help would be greatly appreciated :(
