XP Start Menu - Personalized Menus

G

Guest

I have a small screen and lots of items in the All Programs folder.
I don't want to move folders about as they wont be removed when I uninstall
the program.
The Classic Start Menu with Personalized Menus is what I want except that I
also want to use the XP Start Menu.

I have also noticed that if I turn off the Personalized Menus in Classic
mode the resulting screen takes up less space.
I think this is due to a smaller gap between entries.

Is there any way to use Personalized Menus with the XP Start Menu or reduce
the gap between entries?

With the Classic Start Menu, both of these need to be UNChecked.
XP Start Menu doesn't have Use Personalized Menus option.

XP Start Menu >>
Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button | Advanced tab |
Scroll down to and UNCheck:
Scroll Programs |
Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

Classic Start Menu >>
Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button |
Scroll down to and UNCheck both of these:
Scroll Programs |
Use Personalized Menus
Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

Scroll Programs
[Specifies whether to display the items on the Programs menu as one long
scrolling menu or as horizontal pages. Depending on your screen resolution,
if you have more than 29 or 38 programs installed, and you select to have
one long scrolling menu, you can access the programs you don’t see
by clicking the arrow at each end of the list of programs.]

Use Personalized Menus
[Specifies whether to turn on Personalized Menus.
Personalized Menus keeps the Programs menu clean by hiding items you haven't

Thanks Wes, I have actually read your other posts on similar topics as this. ;)
I can get the effect fine with the Classic Menu it is just the XP Menu I am
interested in.
It is strange/unfortunate that XP Start Menu doesn't have Use Personalized
Menus option.

I was hoping that there might be some registry hack to add it.
I was also hoping for a registry hack to change the spacing between entries
as well.
Is it possible to do it with Themes?
I am currently using the Integra Theme

I use the Classic Start Menu myself.

I do not quite understand what you're after.

When I point to Programs on the Start Menu, I have two columns that display.

Are you saying that you want one column, with an arrow to show the hidden
items?

Are you saying that you have too many columns?

Are you saying that the columns are too wide?
Find the longest item on your Start Menu and rename it.

For example, Microsoft Works Task Launcher rename to MS Works Task Launcher
or just Works Task Launcher. Do the same for other long items.

This key stores the settings of options on the Taskbar and Start Menu
Properties dialog box.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Value Name: IntelliMenus
Data Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Disables personalized menus.
1 = Enables personalized menus.

This entry can be superceded by a Group Policy. While the Turn off
personalized menus policy is in effect, the system removes the Use
Personalized Menus check box from the Start menu and ignores this entry.

Turn off personalized menus Group Policy.
Disables personalized menus. Windows personalizes long menus by moving
recently used items to the top of the menu and hiding items that have not
been used recently. Users can display the hidden items by clicking an arrow
to extend the menu. If you enable this setting, the system does not
personalize menus. All menu items appear and remain in standard order. Also,
this setting removes the Use Personalized Menus option so users do not try
to change the setting while a setting is in effect. Note: Personalized menus
require user tracking. If you enable the Turn off user tracking setting, the
system disables user tracking and personalized menus and ignores this
setting. Tip: To Turn off personalized menus without specifying a setting,
click Start, click Settings, click Taskbar and Start Menu, and then, on the
General tab, clear the Use Personalized Menus option.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer
Value Name: Intellimenus
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0, 1 or 2
0 = Enables personalized menus by default, but lets users change the
setting.
1 = Disables personalized menus and removes the Use Personalized Menus
option, so users cannot change the setting.
2 = Enables personalized menus and removes the Use Personalized Menus
option, so users cannot change the setting. (You cannot use Group Policy to
select this value.)

Note
This entry takes precedence over a user setting. When this entry appears in
the registry with a value of 1, a policy is in effect and the system ignores
the value of Intellimenus (in the Explorer\Advanced subkey) and removes the
Use Personalized Menus option from the Start menu. If users cannot find the
Use Personalized Menus option, check the setting of the Disable personalized
menus policy.

Personalized menus require user tracking. If you enable the Disable user
tracking policy, Group Policy sets the value of NoInstrumentation to 1. As a
result, the system disables user tracking and personalized menus, and
ignores the value of the Intellimenus entry.

Turn off user tracking Group Policy.
Disables user tracking. This setting prevents the system from tracking the
programs users run, the paths they navigate, and the documents they open.
The system uses this information to customize Windows features, such as
personalized menus. If you enable this setting, the system does not track
these user actions. The system disables customized features that require
user tracking information, including personalized menus. Also, see the Turn
off personalized menus setting.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer
Value Name: NoInstrumentation
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = The policy is disabled or not configured. Enables user tracking.
1 = The policy is enabled. Disables user tracking and features that require
tracking data, such as personalized menus.

When there are more items on the Start Menu than can fit on the screen,
Windows can either create a second column of items or it can create a
scrolling menu.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Value Name: StartMenuScrollPrograms
Data Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: YES or NO
YES = Scroll Programs box checked in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties.
NO = Scroll Programs box not checked in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties.

I suppose I do want one column, with an arrow to show the hidden items.
However, I don't want the scrolling effect as it takes too long to scroll
back and forth.

Essentially I do have too many columns as they go beyond my screen width.
Maybe the columns are too wide, but I don't want to rename anything as that
wont get removed when I uninstall the associated program.

Thanks for those registry entries.
Unfortunately they only work when the Classic Menu is on.

Like I said earlier, Scroll Programs takes too long to scroll.
The longest entries were
Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition
Ulead PhotoImpact 3.02 Special Edition

And in the end I had to rename them.

Its disappointing that the Personlised menu feature was taken out of the XP
Start Menu.
Is it there in Vista?

Find the longest item on your Start Menu and rename it.

For example, Microsoft Works Task Launcher rename to MS Works Task
Launcher or just Works Task Launcher. Do the same for other long items.

This key stores the settings of options on the Taskbar and Start Menu
Properties dialog box.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Value Name: IntelliMenus
Data Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Disables personalized menus.
1 = Enables personalized menus.

Users can display the hidden items by clicking an
arrow to extend the menu. If you enable this setting, the system does not
personalize menus. All menu items appear and remain in standard order.
Also, this setting removes the Use Personalized Menus option so users do
not try to change the setting while a setting is in effect. Note:
Personalized menus require user tracking. If you enable the Turn off
user tracking setting, the system disables user tracking and
personalized menus and ignores this setting. Tip: To Turn off
personalized menus without specifying a setting, click Start, click
Settings, click Taskbar and Start Menu, and then, on the General tab,
clear the Use Personalized Menus option.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer
Value Name: Intellimenus
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0, 1 or 2
0 = Enables personalized menus by default, but lets users change the
setting.
1 = Disables personalized menus and removes the Use Personalized Menus
option, so users cannot change the setting.
2 = Enables personalized menus and removes the Use Personalized Menus
option, so users cannot change the setting. (You cannot use Group Policy
to select this value.)

Note
This entry takes precedence over a user setting. When this entry appears
in the registry with a value of 1, a policy is in effect and the system
ignores the value of Intellimenus (in the Explorer\Advanced subkey) and
removes the Use Personalized Menus option from the Start menu. If users
cannot find the Use Personalized Menus option, check the setting of the
Disable personalized menus policy.

Personalized menus require user tracking. If you enable the Disable user
tracking policy, Group Policy sets the value of NoInstrumentation to 1.
As a result, the system disables user tracking and personalized menus,
and ignores the value of the Intellimenus entry.

Turn off user tracking Group Policy.
Disables user tracking. This setting prevents the system from tracking
the programs users run, the paths they navigate, and the documents they
open. The system uses this information to customize Windows features,
such as personalized menus. If you enable this setting, the system does
not track these user actions. The system disables customized features
that require user tracking information, including personalized menus.
Also, see the Turn off personalized menus setting.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer
Value Name: NoInstrumentation
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = The policy is disabled or not configured. Enables user tracking.
1 = The policy is enabled. Disables user tracking and features that
require tracking data, such as personalized menus.

When there are more items on the Start Menu than can fit on the screen,
Windows can either create a second column of items or it can create a
scrolling menu.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Value Name: StartMenuScrollPrograms
Data Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: YES or NO
YES = Scroll Programs box checked in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties.
NO = Scroll Programs box not checked in Taskbar and Start Menu
Properties.

Thanks Wes, I have actually read your other posts on similar topics as
this. ;) I can get the effect fine with the Classic Menu it is just the
XP Menu I am interested in.
It is strange/unfortunate that XP Start Menu doesn't have Use
Personalized Menus option.

I was hoping that there might be some registry hack to add it.
I was also hoping for a registry hack to change the spacing between
entries
as well.
Is it possible to do it with Themes?
I am currently using the Integra Theme

:

[Specifies whether to display the items on the Programs menu as one
long scrolling menu or as horizontal pages. Depending on your screen
resolution, if you have more than 29 or 38 programs installed, and you
select to have one long scrolling menu, you can access the programs you
don’t see
by clicking the arrow at each end of the list of programs.]

Use Personalized Menus
[Specifies whether to turn on Personalized Menus.
Personalized Menus keeps the Programs menu clean by hiding items you
haven't used recently, while still keeping other programs easily
accessible. You can gain access to hidden programs by clicking the
down arrow at the bottom of the Programs menu.]

I have a small screen and lots of items in the All Programs folder.
I don't want to move folders about as they wont be removed when I
uninstall the program.
The Classic Start Menu with Personalized Menus is what I want except
that I also want to use the XP Start Menu.

I have also noticed that if I turn off the Personalized Menus in
Classic mode the resulting screen takes up less space.
I think this is due to a smaller gap between entries.

Is there any way to use Personalized Menus with the XP Start Menu or
reduce the gap between entries?

Like I said earlier, Scroll Programs takes too long to scroll.
The longest entries were
Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition
Ulead PhotoImpact 3.02 Special Edition

And in the end I had to rename them.

Its disappointing that the Personlised menu feature was taken out of the
XP
Start Menu.
Is it there in Vista?

Vista has a totally different Start menu. If there are more than can be
displayed in one screen there is a scroll bar on the right.
