XP, SP3 and IIS.

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, but I've noticed that the IIS
Public forum users don't seem to get answers.

Anyway, I have XP Pro (had SP2 on it), with IIS 6. My web site used to work
fine, but since upgrading to SP3 last evening, users cannot even connect to
me. They get all kinds of "Server not responding", "Timeouts" and several
other messages.

I've always used this site:
http://www.websitepulse.com/help/to...er+the+verification+code+displayed+below.<br>,
to test my website externally.

Even this tool is not connecting.

Is there something in SP3 that crapped my server? It's the only thing that
has changed on my system for eons.

My web address is: www.mynflpicks.ca and it has been running for some time.

I can connect to it internally using localhost, the internal and external ip
addresses as well as the Internet Friendly Address. This makes sense since
the resolution is occurring at my router's level (I would guess).

Additional info: router is a 2700HG-E Gateway with firmware version 4.25.43
installed. According to my router's update configuration link, it is the
latest version.

I've tried to get hold of my ISP (Telus), but as it is Canada Day, there
response is (as always) terribly slow.

I would appreciate any ideas.

Thanks,

MJ

IE version?

Is the machine fully patched at Windows Update now?

Can you open IE to any other webpages? (I cannot open
http://www.mynflpicks.ca/ here.)

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you
installed WinXP SP3?

Hi PA Bear, thanks for replying. To answer your questions:

1) I am running IE 6.0.2900.5512.xpsp08413-2111,
2) I just checked WIndows Update, it did no offer any updates and I have no
hidden updates except for a video driver, but I don't want to install it,
nor do I think it has anythign to do with my problem,
3) Yes I can open IE to any web page as well as firefox,
4) Anti-Virus: Kaspersky 7.0.1.321. I have no rules to prevent IIS access
(or any HTTP/FTP relations). I've also paused and disabled it to no avail.
So, I removed it, checked for Windows Updates again - nothing offered. I had
two people try my website and they got the same errors. So it seems the
Anti-virus software is not an issue. However, I'm leaving it off my system
for a day or so until I resolve this issue - dangerous I know, bu I'm not
going to do any browsing with that machine,
5) No firewall software at all. None, nada, zero. I let my router handle
that for me,
6) No apps were running during the install, other than the normal Windows
services and requirements - BITS, Update Service etc. I made sure that
everything was shutdown before updating.

Also, in summary, the problem is with users on the Internet, not myself.
Please see my post regarding connecting internally and externally from my
machine.

So the issue and the question remains, what (if anything) has SP3 done? It
is the "Only" thing that has changed on my system in the last 24 hours
(roughly). This I am absolutley sure about.

Again, I've rechecked the Security permissions on the directories and IIS
permisssion. There is nothing that has changed there either.

The only other information that I can add is that I am using a 2700HG-E
Gateway router. This has been fine prior to the update. I checked the rules
and port forwarding and again nothing has changed. Everything (in the
router) is exactly as it should be so I am 100% confident that that device
can be ruled out.

The "Only" thing that has changed is updating to SP3. So, I changed my
router config to point to "dummy" Win2K, WINXP (SP2) and Win2KS machines and
they worked. So the problem is definitely on the machine in question.

Any other pointers or ideas are appreciated.

Cheers.

Is the webpage hosted on the WinXP SP3 machine?

Repeat: I can't open the page either.

yes, it is on an XP SP3 system. Yup, I saw your comment regarding inability
to open as well.

I'm really confused about this. I guess more work is needed.

Thanks PA Bear.

My hunch would be to try and remove the IIS services and re-install
them from the Internet Information Services (IIS) menu of Add/Remove
Windows Components. Back everything up before you do it.

Thee Chicago Wolf, thanks for the suggestion. I tried that about the same
time you sent this. I've tried everything I can think of. Just can't get
anyone to connect to this machine fro the internet, yet internally all is
well. I even put this bad boy naked on the web - no way at all could anyone
connect.

Out of pure desperation, I ghosted one of my XP machines with SP2 on it.
This is the "Dummy" machine I tried the other day and it worked fine. SOooo,
I applied SP3 to it and I'll be go to he!!, if the same thing is now
occurring on that machine!

I mean exactly the same thing! I can believe one machine, but two completely
different machines (the first one is a Satellite, the other is an Acer).

So now I say to myself, time to back everything up, nuke and rebuild.

I used the OEM DVD and rebuilt the machine. All was well, then I applied SP3
and well - YUK again. I "just had to try this" ): :(

I've sent all the particulars to Toshiba along with the exact steps to
reproduce. As well I have a Ghost image that I'm going to drop off with my
supplier who is going to send it to Toshiba - maybe something in my
version??? That's a reach as I have the same issue with the Acer.

I'm not suggesting that this is purely an SP3 thing, but nothing else has
changed and nothing else makes sense.

This is just weird, yet hauntingly intriguing.

However, I do want to say thanks to all.

Frustrated, but daunting :)

I did not see anything in the knowledge base for this issue but I
guess it is probably something very dumb. There have been well over 50
patches / hotfixes since SP3 was released and I cannot say if any of
them, if applied, would remedy your issue. Did you think about opening
a case or asking in the Technet forum for SP3? It's free.
