XP SP2 Update

Hi,

My O/S is XP Professional SP1 and my system is an acer notebook.
Since installing the SP2 on a notebook is more sensitive than doing it on a
PC, I contacted my manufacturer and was told to wait for patches and driver
updates to be released on their website before going ahead.

But I remember reading some article somewhere on the net (can't recall the
site) that said let Windows Update detect which updates in SP2 are neccessary
for your system instead of downloading the entire Service Pack. Is this
really true?

I have also come accross some updates that were downloaded and installed in
my system, through Windows Update that had a SP2 written at the end of the KB
code, are these Service Pack 2 updates?

Anyway, when Windows Update installed a Cummulative Update for SP1 in my
system recently, those updates that had a SP2 at the end of them have been
removed from my system. (This I checked in the Add/Remove Program)

I am just interested to know what exactly is happenning.........thank you.

Those updates with SP2 in the name are ones that were marked to go into
the full sp2 package but that doesn't mean SP2 is in fact installed.
If you install SP2 using automatic updates from windows update it will
scan your system and download only what is needed. But the same thing
happens if you download the full network install version or use the SP2
CD. The install routine scans your system and installs only what is
needed so the effect is the same. What the vendor was saying was that
they will be coming out with patches you need to apply to your laptop
before you do the SP2 upgrade to be compatible. These are not part of
the SP2 update. Laptops are very proprietary. Here is some reference
information about installing SP2.
