XP-SP2 Firewire Speedup

Microsoft just posted an update to XP-SP2 to correct a speed setting for
Firewire captures. Seems the original SP2 install capped the download
speed a S100 instead of permitting the S400 speeds that video capture
prefers.

Details and the download are found here in KB885222:

<quote>

After you install Windows XP Service Pack 2, some 1394 devices (such as
digital cameras that use S400 speed) may not perform as expected. Install
this update to help prevent this issue. After you install this update, you
will have to restart your computer.

I noticed a significant capture improvement with this patch.

How would we check to see if we actually need this
upgrade? or should we just download it anyway? I don't
seem to have any problems with capturing from my Sony TRV-
460. However I have an external DVD burner that is
connected via firewire and I did receive some sort of
memory error after burning my one and only DVD since
upgrading to SP2. I though it might be due to the high
fragmentation on my hard drive.

Since SP2 capped all firewire connections at S100 speed, I would assume
that all firewire equiped SP2 machines would require this patch.

YMMV, but I would (and did) download and install on the assumption that it
can not hurt and might actually help.

FWIW, it does show up in the Add/Remove dialog and so could be removed
should it be found to cause problems.

well i downloaded this hot fix but not sure if I really
needed it. I do not see it in the add/remove (programs?).
The knowledge base article gives info on updating the
registry. Do you need to do that or just download? Guess
I'm just a little leary about trying to fix something
that ain't broke.

anyone else have comments on this hot fix?

Papa,

I ran the install right from the windows site. Yes, I've
read further about .exe files how you should download
first. Sometimes you just don't think when you are
unsure. Anyway, mikkl says it shows up in his add/remove
dialog. I don't see it in mine. Do you see it in your
control panel - add/remove? Like I asked, is the
download sufficient or do I actually have to go edit the
registry for it to take effect? I wonder why the
knowledge base article talks about the download as the
answer to the problem, but then also talks about registry
editing. Is that so if you don't do the download you go
change things yourself??

Some things are just a little beyond my reach and I like
to know for sure before I royally screw things up.

thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

I don't see it in the Control Panel as an Add/Remove item on my laptop...but
I see it as a restore point.... as "Installed Windows XP KB885222'...

On my desktop, I ran the install package but haven't rebooted yet for the
rest of the process.

The info about doing a registry change is only if you add a host controller
for a new 1394 device in the future.... as if you'll remember....

I searched the registry on my laptop and desktop for the word 'sidspeed'...
mentioned in the KB article. It's in about 4 spots and had the value
SidSpeed 0x00000002 (2) which aligns with the number needed for the faster
speed.

You can search and see if you find the word and what the value is set to.

....... and I checked another desktop that is running SP1... the word isn't
in the registry so the registry entries must have been added by SP2..... I'm
installing SP2 on it now to see what the entries will be before the KB
patch.

To see them in your Add/Remove dialog, you need to check the box at the top
of the window that says "Show Updates"
