xp sp2 firewall grayed out.

I am not on a domain, home net work, admin on my machine, logged in as such.
And yet the firewall is grayed out.
I log in to pc with admin rights.
Since I can not turn it off, even with gpedit.msc, I can uninstall sp2.
Is there another option?
Thanks

For some reason i cannot explain my firewall has been turned off and cannot
turn it on in security center. I have booted in safe mode ran AVG... all
clean,SpyBot ... all clean and S&D and ADAware(AdAware did find 3 Critical
objects... all tracking cookies). I followed you instructions and it worked
just fine. I still am unable to figure out why the firewall is off
though??????????
