XP SP2 - files corrup, installation aborts

I have a SP2 disk [DVD I believe]that came with my MSDN subscription. I have
successfully upgraded 2 systems [XP Home], but I have an XP Pro system,
currently @ SP1, where SP2 installation aborts with a "... file is corrupt"
and installation halts and cleans up the temp directory. The file corrupt
happens at different times during install so I thought it might have to do
with the data transfer from the DVD drive. Pursuant to that notion I copied
the files locally but achieved the same result. Any clues as to how to
proceed?

I would boot to the Recovery Console and run Chkdsk

Nick,

repair the hardware. My first guess would be the hard disk, the
hard disk controller, a hard disk cable or the RAM.

Any other problems with that computer? What does chkdsk report?

Chkdsk found a few minor problems and repaired them successfully. There are
no other problems with this computer...everything else functioning normally.
Ran SP2 installer after chkdsk repair and it stopped with the same error
message only sooner in the process. I doesn't seem to matter whether I run it
from the CD/DVD drive or locally.

Still cannot install SP2 ... I shudder to think I need to re-install XP to
install SP2. Is there some verbose logging I can turn on to have the progress
saved?

CHKDSK reported a few minor errors and they were repaired successfully. Upon
running SP2 install again resulted in the same error only it occurred sooner.
There are no other problems with this computer, i.e. everything else seems to
function normally. There is 40% free disk, 128Mb RAM, COU is Intel P2 400MHz

I shudder to think that I need to re-install XP to install SP2... is there
some verbose logging I can turn on to track down what is happening?

Nick,

next steps are outlined in http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm.
