XP SP2 Dial up connection slow to load - help please

David

Windows XP Home SP1 & SP2 installed
Dell 8250 2.6 mHz
512kb ram
120 gb hard disk

I have a short cut to my dial up Internet connection in my startup folder.
Prior to installing SP2 I could turn on my computer and it would dial in
immediately. After installing SP2 the system does not connect until about
three minutes have elapsed.

When installing SP2 I used all the default values presented during
instalation.

My usual desktop shows up after about 40 seconds and I can manually select
the dial up icon and it will dial immediately, however, the one from the
start up folder has yet to start. I can hear my disk spinning intermittently
during the 3 minute delay before it will finally dial up using the start up
folder item.

I've searched Goggle for an answer but so far nothing. Any assistance would
be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Try deleting the old shortcut and making a new one.

I think this just reflects a long boot time in the very untidy system
that the SP1 setup has left. Installing SP2 leaves files scattered
around and undoes all the optimisations that have gone on - it
accordingly deletes the PreFetch folder, and that has to be rebuilt.
Defrag the system, and then reboot two or three times during the next
week, so that data on boot accumulates in PreFetch along with that on
programs you load, and the every-three day optimisation will start to
improves things pretty soon

Try entering the following run command and then restart the computer.
It resets the TCP/IP stack (whatever that is). Note: A DOS screen will
be displayed for a few seconds.

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
