xp/sp2 clean install problems

I recently clean installed xp pro on to a new hard drive. I stopped at the
activate section. I then installed Mcafee from a cd and memory stick. I set
up a dial up connection( rural availability!! ) Modem is 1/2 speed than
before , tried property resets as per microsoft documents, no help w/ speed
problem. Now I am noticing other problems, in device manager/other devices=
unsupported device. Event viewer shows com+event system bad code, acpi bios
0x070 write read error.
Tried diagnose errors and find message " Windows management instrumentation
software missing or moved". I've noticed that sometimes windows is hanging up
at shut down. I have 10 days to activate and am considering doing so and
going through the updates at 16 kb per sec. I'm wondering if the updates are
what I need to get things up and running or if I houdn't have loaded the
virus scan sw .
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Get youre prioritys straight....Mcafee install before activation?????
W/O activation windows update will not run, then xp critical updates will not
be installed,etc...How about hardware drivers,chipset,controller,video
adapter,
etc...Mcafee is one big piece of junk.....

Your opinion re: McAfee is your own. He was doing the sensible thing by
loading protection first.
I would assume you need to download updates so activate if you can.
Did you format the HD when doing this clean install?

We have McAfee at work and at home and what you did should have been ok.

You should have a restore point right at the first install. Bring up system
restore and see if you can reload to the point before McAfee was installed.
It should show up as "Before McAfee install" or something like that. You
will have to reactivate. If you already activated then save off the WPA.*
files. and put them back into \windows\system32 after restoreing.

If you still got your old disk you might be able to avoid reactivating by
copying those files off the drive and putting them on the new one.

What he did is sensible especially if he scanned and knew the CD and the
memory stick is virus free!
I guess 26K is definitely slow, but may not be all that bad when compared to
some cable subscriber during peak hours.
