I have been using messenger for a few years with the
email attached to a hotmail account. after applying Sp2
yesterday the inbox now points to my outlook account on
the client. how do I set this back?

There are two messengers - MSN and Windows. Maybe you now have both and need
to sort things out. See if \Program Files now has a folder for each one.

I've got exactly the same problem with Outlook. I want the real time alert
on emails to my hotmail account in IE and still use my outlook as the default
browser. Doesnt seem you can have the two together. If you go into
IE/tools/internet options/programs you can put hotmail as the default so it
works as before. But then your email client isn't the default anymore. I
spent 45 mins being pushed about from place to place with support. I've
downloaded Messenger 5 to see if that makes a difference. NO!!!! It's
annoying. I've also left various posts on different forums with no reply and
this is this first one i've come across. If anyone can shed light on this
please do, or its back to the phone waiting in queues all day. Thanks.

to install MSN messenger 6.2. all the functionality is
returned. the functionality was moved from windows
messenger to MSN messenger.

That falls in line with the rumor I heard that MS plans to gradually discontinue
Windows Messenger in favor of the MSN version. Installing SP2 left my WM 4.7
installed, but did make the changes already pointed out. I may be forced to
change to MSNM 6.2 since I no longer really like WM 4.7. :-(

Hi Larc,

Windows Messenger isn't going anywhere; it's *the* client for connecting to Live
Communications Server (http://office.microsoft.com/livecomm). Unless you really think they'd
pull the plug on the primary client that is used to connect to a product they actually make
direct money from =).

In either Outlook or Outlook Express you can have both your regular
email account and another account(s) including hotmail.

Suppose you already have a non-hotmail email account in Outlook
and you want to add your hotmail email account. Use Tools,
email accounts, add new account, choose http and the rest is
fairly automatic, since it is a Microsoft program. It will look like this:

Outlook
Inbox
Sent
etc

Hotmail
Inbox
Sent
etc

Click on the Inbox of the account that has new mail.
So in IE under Tools, Internet Options, Programs
set Email to Outlook and your Hotmail account will be
contained in the Outlook display. If you reply or compose
in Hotmail there, it uses your hotmail email address/server
or if you use your other email address and its server. You
can make Hotmail the default email client here and receive
notifications when new email arrives.

Make An Email Account The Default

If you are using more than one account, you can specify which account
is the default so that it will be the first account to be processed.

Microsoft Outlook sends your messages using the default account unless
you click the Accounts button (next to the Send button) on the message
to choose another account to use for that message.

1. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
2. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
3. In the list, click the e-mail account you want, and then click Set
as Default.

Maybe I don't know exactly what you mean because I don't
see how this connects to Messenger or how there is interference.

Using Outlook with more than one email account, picking one
as a default, receiving email notification, is fairly commonplace
so maybe I missed something in your post.

Stephen

I don't see why not. Microsoft Outlook is your email *client*. Within
Outlook
you can have several email *accounts* and make hotmail your default account
which receives email notifications. Internet Explorer (IE) is your browser
and this will work with IE but I don't know about MSN Explorer which is
another browser. I gave details in the other post.

After re-reading this thread I think the simplest thing to do is add the
Hotmail
email account to Outlook, make it the default and enable email notification.
The Outlook icon should be just to the right of "START" at the bottom.

Stephen

It's strange they would remove a valuable function from something they value!
