XP Shutdown

Xyzzz

I recently installed Windows XP on a new hard drive and
after completing the installation my PC keeps shutting
down and the reason for doing this is given as an
unexpected closing of the "remote procedure call". Does
anyone have a clue as to what is causing this and how it
can be corrected?

Hi,

It's the blaster worm that infects unprotected machines. You need to enable
and properly patch the system. WinXP "out of the box" is very vulnerable to
this and other worms. When the shutdown warning appears, click start/run and
enter "shutdown -a" to halt the process. Information:

You need the patch described here to protect against it:

MS03-039: A Buffer Overrun in RPCSS Could Allow an Attacker to Run Malicious
Programs

Problem is, you needed to install the patch BEFORE you got infected to avoid
it.
